An authentic family B&B Guesthouse in the 11eme
Welcome to a discreet address in Paris, a generations-run family home and B&B, combining elegance, serenity and personalised service in the heart of the capital.
Bonjour Petite Paris guests and travellers, I’m so proud and honoured to present to you Claire’s wonderful little secret home sanctuary in Paris in the 11eme, Rue Chemin Vert (location details below). Also known as Chez Pepe Merle ie Grandpas - as this was Claire’s Garndpas home and her families home, and an absolutely quintessential Petite Paris style home, a true traditional Chambre d’Hotes (B&B Guesthouse) that boasts the deeply personalised, authentic, beautiful, family warmth and insider Parisian life experience that Petite promises.
I was beyond excited to find this B&B in Paris, it is precisely the sort of home I hunt and hope to find in Paris for you my dear seeker of authentic cultural immersive experiences in Paris. As this is a REAL Parisian home environment and experience, with your welcoming and dedicated host Claire who’s deep sincere passion for personalised service and care extends way beyond just offering a key to one of her incredible 4 guest bedrooms (plus 3 bathrooms and guests own dining area and kitchen to enjoy anytime), within this private and very intimate residence which is her own home, where she lives, and has been her families home for many generations. It holds so much history, secrets and stories in itself that Claire will love to share over your breakfast service… her favourite part of the B&B service where she gets to connect with you while serving you fresh goodies that change everyday. Claire likes to surprise you (any dietary needs catered for too) Read on!
When I arrived at Claire’s building I already new a gem lived inside. Call it my B&B sixth sense…as well as the interaction I already had with Claire leading up to our meeting that gave me all the confidence I needed to head over fast. And this secret gem did not disappoint…
I was immediately met with a very unassuming doorway into what looked like just another ordinary building, but thats what I loved best… not a flashy hotel facade promising you ‘celebrity status’ but a doorway, to a charming inviting home, a real residential home that can ONLY be found behind doors you normally walk past without a second glance, a hidden home more beautiful and thoughtfully prepared than any hotel, because its full of family history, heirlooms, artworks and stories, generations of secrets ready to be shared with you by Claire (more on the buildings history below - but it used to be a bronze works factory where Claire’s grandfather used to work hence the official name Chez Pepe Merle - his name! I love it!)
And truly the best secret authentic B&Bs gems are always quiet, not necessarily on the main boulevards, and they don’t smack you in the face and say’ hey here is the Paris you are looking for’. Secret gems like this don’t need need to scream its presence, value, or worth. It simply represents the fact that beauty, authenticity and luxury isn’t always obvious, seen or announced in obvious way. It has to be found!
So this is aB&B that will give you the total Petite experience - intimate genuine real human kindness, caring and a feeling that you are arriving home and staying with family - because you are! Claire offers some additional personalised services too that you may love - listed below.

Altogether there are 4 guest bedrooms in this home but on this first level where the dining and kitchen are, there are the first 2 guestrooms also. The Grand Palais Guestroom (with ensuite bathroom) and the Oberkampf Guestroom (with private external bathroom on the same floor).
A spiral staire case from the dining room leads to the upper floor which has 2 more guestrooms, the Menilmontant Guestroom and the St Michel Guestroom, together they are also known as the Family Suite - one is a double bedroom and the other a twin bedroom. These 2 rooms are only ever booked to the same family or group as they share one bathroom upstairs. Family & Home History
A family story rooted in East Paris
Claires grandfather, Marcel Merle born in Paris 19eme in 1903 (passed 1980 in the 11eme) was a sort of "inventor-turned-coppersmith" who lived in the 20th arrondissement on Rue des Rondeaux (runs alongside Père Lachaise Cemetery) with his wife Marthe who prior ran her own grocery store on Rue Stendhal in the 20eme, and their two daughters, Simone and Paulette. His workshop becoming too small, he moved his wife and daughters, purchasing the VALDO factory located here at 127-129-131 Rue du Chemin Vert in the 11th arrondissement - where your B&B now lives. This factory was in a sorry state when it was bought in 1946: the former owners of this foundry had ceased operations in 1936 - at the time, the chimney was in danger of collapsing and, in this post-war period when every material was precious, it was dismantled brick by brick to be reused elsewhere!
An industrial heritage in the heart of Paris 11
The MERLE metalworking factory operated until 1986. It manufactured refrigerators, water heaters, and many other products necessary to meet the ever-increasing demand for comfort in the post-war era. But Pépé Merle also produced the first machines for bleaching paper pulp, cable cars for ski resorts (notably Serre Chevalier), the first machine for drawing road marking lines (a patent never filed or used by Marcel…), and even cabinets to house the first IBM computers.
The rebirth of a place that has become a charming guesthouse
Having become too small, polluting, and noisy for its Parisian surroundings, the factory closed its doors in 1986, but the business was taken over by the industrial group ASEDEC and relocated to the suburb of Noisy-le-Grand. A second life then began for this former industrial site: Claire’s great-grandmother, worried about managing the metalworking shop alone, had started building a small garage around 1956/57 to operate a parking service. Paulette Merle and her husband Bernard Gisi, a Renault dealership, operated the former factory site, selling new cars, offering repairs, bodywork, a gas station, and parking, until 2006. Today, part of the garage remains on the ground floor of number 131; the two facade buildings are the only vestiges of that bygone era. New buildings have sprung up on the site of the old factory. The entire space is dedicated to housing; there is no longer any trace of the industrial past of the place; the 11th arrondissement is no longer "the little factory of Paris".
